Things to do in Nanaimo

Nanaimo the "Harbour City" is also known as the "Bathtub racing capital of the world". Bathtub races began in 1976 and are the highlight of a popular Marine Festival every summer. And, whether you are an active adventurer or like to take in the sights, the must-do experiences in Nanaimo centre around the quaint working harbour. From diving and snorkelling one of our sunken ships, to Island-hopping on a sail boat or motorboat, to kayaking the protected waters of the Georgia Straight (the 35km between Vancouver and Vancouver Island) beach combing one of the hiking trails or eating seafood on a floating restaurant down town.

Nanaimo also has plenty of green space featuring Island and water vistas - some of the local favorites include Pipers Lagoon, Neck Point Park, Newcastle Island Provincial Park, Westwood Lake and Buttertubs Marsh (a bird watchers' paradise!). A piece of Island history...the Hudson's Bay Company - the oldest commercial corporation in North America and one of the oldest in the world.
